Matisse was so intrigued by the dark, striking features of Lorette, a young model of Italian origin, that he produced nearly 40 paintings of her over a two-year period. With the boldness of her gaze, the simplicity of the composition, and the use of broad brushstrokes of pure color, this painting looks back to works from the previous decade in the artist’s career known for their dramatic and spare settings. While Matisse usually emphasized her long dark hair, here, he wrapped Lorette’s hair in a white turban, evoking his great interest in North African and Islamic cultures.
