Bonnard painted landscapes and still lifes throughout his career, but it is in his works incorporating figures that he was often the most inventive. Here, a woman resting her head in her hand shares the tabletop with a large basket of fruit. The brown dog in the immediate foreground appears in a number of works from the period and has been identified as a pet belonging to Marthe Bonnard, the artist’s wife. Dramatic compositional elements, such as the high viewpoint and the cropping at the top of the image, are both reminiscent of Japanese wood-block prints.
