This idealized woman wearing a turban-like fringed headwrap and delicate jewelry may be inspired by artist Raphael (1483–1520), known for his portrayals of heroic women from biblical and mythological stories. Her accessories reflect European Renaissance adaptations of Islamic fashions, popularized through trade with the Ottoman Empire, based in modern-day Turkey. In 1829, Rembrandt Peale traveled to Italy to copy the works of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century artists, such as Raphael, to revitalize his own painting and satisfy American patrons’ desire for classical subjects.
