Woman’s Hat

Klamath, 1867-1899

Physical Qualities Cedar root, grass, 4 1/4 × 7 in. (10.8 × 17.8 cm.)
Credit Line Bequest of Florence Reese Winslow
Object Number 1953.220.B.63
If you look under the rim of this hat, you will see that the designs on the inside and the outside are identical. This effect is created with full-twist overlay twining using double wefts (photo): two wefts are twined as a pair and given a full twist each time they pass around the warp. The more common way to produce identical interior and exterior designs is to use a single weft, which passes around the warp without twists. Photo: C.
