Portrait of the jazz ensemble the World Saxophone Quartet. From left to right: David Murray, Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake, and Harriet Blueitt. (Please note that the artist reversed the last two names in his inscription on this print.) The World Saxophone Quartet was founded in 1977. The original members were: Julius Hemphill (1938-1995), who played alto and soprano saxophone and flute; Oliver Lake (born 1942), who played alto and soprano saxophone; Hamiet Bluiett (born 1940), who played baritone saxophone and alto clarinet; and David Murray (born 1955), who played tenor saxophone and bass clarinet. The first three had worked together as members of the Black Artists' Group in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1989, Hemphill left the group due to illness, and several saxophonists have filled his chair in the years since.
