Orange lines and squares interrupt gradations of beige in this narrow wall hanging by German American immigrant Maria Kipp. After graduating as the first woman from Germany’s State Academy for Textile Industry, Kipp moved to California in 1924 and founded Maria Kipp, Inc., which specialized in minimalist designs woven on handlooms (see image). An advocate for racial and gender equality, Kipp was also a working mother and champion for women’s rights in the workplace. I

Inscribed: The textile has a small square label, woven in dark blue and beige that reads:'MARIA [diamond] KIPP [square] HANDWEAVES [dot] LOS [dot] ANGELES [square] [dot] CALIFORNIA [dot]/ The label is sewn in 'on point,' making it a diamond, and has an abstract design in the center. This tag was used for only a short time, indicating that the textile was made in the 1930s. Note: Small paper tag with printed "Glide 4 Patent" at top marked on obverse: No/ 6854-B" and on reverse: "46530[written in ink and crossed out in pencil]/56275 [written in red pencil over what appears to be a different number. this was affixed to textile near the trademark label with metal prongs. Removed from the textiles by Anita Jones 4-24-2013 during photography and placed in plastic bag affixed to object folder in Curatorial files. Small holes left in fabric. This tag does not appear to have been recorded previously.
