This work is made from memories. From 1969 to 1970, David C. Driskell was Visiting Professor at the University of Ife, Nigeria. The collage's
linear patterns refer to veranda posts on Yoruba shrines and public buildings and the region's beautiful tall trees. The colors are inspired by
textiles the artist saw women wearing in the marketplace and by layered garments donned during masquerades.
Driskell also drew on memories from his childhood in western North Carolina: his mother's technique of making strip quilts from scraps of cloth
and used clothing. He painted or rolled strips of color onto the paper and added torn segments, resulting in a surface that-like memory
itself-seems to flicker in and out of view.
