And I teach people how to farm and there's a constant conversation about balancing work and rest, and this drawing balances it beautifully. It’s a simple drawing at first glance. It’s really beautiful. It’s really sparse. The woman's face doesn't have a lot of detail, but she looks exhausted. She has been working, very likely with straw, she's probably building a hay pile. It's a pitchfork, so she's shoveling two things: shit or hay. The artist, he probably was in the field, and this is a very noble image, and in her sadness or exhaustion, he sees this moment of beauty. Does he see this moment and ask her to be still? And she has to hold his pose? It begs so many questions: Who in fact has the power in this moment? And, for me, it's an image that I can identify with very intently because I have taken a rest like that.
