Station 7: Jesus Falls for the Second Time
Henri Matisse
Date:
1951
Medium:
Black enamel brushwork on ceramic panel
Visual Description:
Station 7 is positioned near the right of the mural and is slightly off the S-shaped primary path that the other Stations follow. It is just below Station 6 and just above Station 3. It is approximately two tiles high and six tiles wide. A single figure represents Jesus after he falls for the second time while carrying the cross and is depicted sprawled across the ground. The figure’s head is downturned, and the figure’s left arm extends outward towards the left side of the mural. The figure’s left leg, represented by a single line, bends under its body, while a single line representing the right leg extends out and to the right side of the mural. The figure is featureless, but its posture suggests exhaustion or collapse.
