[Ashley Minner Jones] I am Dr. Ashley Minner Jones. I'm a community-based visual artist and folklorist from Baltimore, Maryland, where I still live and work, and I'm an enrolled member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. And it's no accident that I was born and raised here; this is home to the largest community of Lumbee Indians outside of our tribal territory in North Carolina. Literally thousands, anywhere from 2,000 to 7,000 came up to Baltimore following the Second World War seeking work and a better quality of life. And this object really caught my eye because I'm pretty sure my grandparents had a very similar model in their house. And it immediately also evoked a memory of this photograph that another elder Lumbee person in our community has of herself. And you can tell it's like the, the early 1950s and she's in her living room and she's by a console TV set in a fur coat with shiny Christmas cards taped to the wall, and her hair has been curled, and you can just see, like, she made it. You know, she's in a nice living room in her home in Baltimore, which is such a contrast to where our people came from. Which, to this day—Robeson County North Carolina, and the surrounding counties—they’re very rural, farm life. It just reminds me of the American suburban dream, and what a lot of Lumbee people would have aspired to have in their living spaces. [Vacuum cleaner whirrs] It has style, has status. I hate vacuuming but if I had this object, I don't think I would vacuum with it [chuckles]. I'd just show it off.
