In "1”=50", graph paper serves as a framework for Robert Smithson’s scaled composite of three views of a pyramid: frontal, side, and bird’s eye. Though guided by the grid, Smithson’s lines stray from the rigid structure of the paper, revealing the individual qualities of the artist’s hand. The deviations of the artist’s mark-making, coupled with the progressive construction of the pyramidal form, corresponds with his interest in entropy—the idea that orderly structures and systems gradually move towards chaos. Smithson’s exploration of accumulation and entropy was informed by his far-ranging observations of architectural collapse and disorder, extending from the ruins of Mesoamerican pyramids to the mid-20th-century built environment of his native New Jersey. Beyond drawing, the artist investigated these concepts through his ambitious earthworks(site-specific art created through physical interventions in the landscape) and in stand-alone sculpture.
