Benjamin Green was a skilled printmaker, publisher, and drawing teacher. The two prints here expertly reproduce paintings by his brother, Amos Green, whose specialty was flower and fruit still-life paintings. These lush bouquets illustrate many types of flowers, such as roses and honeysuckle. Flower paintings, including works by Abraham Mignon and Clara Peeters in this gallery, once brought explorations of botany and the natural world into the homes of wealthy collectors, but they were often too costly for many would-be patrons. Prints such as these provided an affordable alternative to the popular practice of collecting floral still-life painting in 17th- and 18th-century Europe. They also acted as reminders of the passage of time: these exquisite blooms—like all living things—will eventually fade and die.
