An Album Quilt [Baltimore area] consisting of 42 individual blocks, each measuring approximately 12-3/4" x 12-1/2" and composed of white cotton, each appliquéd with a different design, including crossed floral or leaf stems (sometimes interpreted as branches of the "toothache" tree), pineapple motifs, stars within sawtooth circles, floral sprays, "Presidents" wreaths or Washington's wreaths, grape or berry sprigs, simple floral baskets or pots, oak leaves, heart wreaths, eagles or birds, and a multitude of cut paper (scherensnitte) motifs. the most impressive is a flower pot with a lattice-work center and a variety of flowers with embroidery details. The rest of the motifs are fashioned from a large variety of fabrics, including: Solid colored fabrics of red, yellow-green, blue-green (forest green), brown, lt. orange (gold), bright chrome orange, and blue; Printed fabrics, including green ground prints with yellow and black figures (florals, dots, paisley prints with yellow flowers) and green grounds with black figures (leaf motifs, ovals, arrows, stripes), black grounds with green figures, and black grounds with green and yellow figures, red grounds with figures (checkered yellow and black; yellow, black, blue, and green leafs or flower buds, orange, blue and black geometrics; white polka dots, French "Restoration" motifs in yellow and black; yellow grounds with white dots, multicolored sprigs, frow florals; grey-ground print with white and browns, blue ground with dk. blue, white, and brown figures, and more. Each block is signed with what appears to be a hand-written signature inked, though probably all in the same hand. The single border is 3-5/8 to 4" wide on all sides. it is appliquéd with undulating green vine (black ground with green vine print) ornamented with bellow flowers fashioned from a red print (red round with yellow, blue, green, and black floral). the corners are square. Techniques used throughout the quilt top include appliqué, reverse appliqué, layered appliqué, chintz appliqué (sometimes called Broderie Perse), embroidery, and weaving or intertwining of appliqué strips. All stitching, appliqué, and joining are hand sewn. The backing is seamed in 14-1/2", 35" and 34-1/4"" panels joined with hand stitching. The blocks are joined by hand stitching and the quilt is hand quilted in double-line clam shell pattern within blocks, outline stitch-around appliqués, and running diagonal lines within the border and in some of the blocks as well. The quilting is very fine (approx. 18 stitches to the inch back and front) . The binding is brought from front to back. The thread is white.
