The abstract floral motifs and bright strong colors of this silk are typical of French Art Deco fabrics. Designers such as Paul Poiret dismissed Edwardian preferences for refined and elegant pastels including "lilacs, swooning mauves, tender blue... maizes, straws, [and] all that was soft, washed out, and insipid," preferring instead reds, greens, violets, royal blues, purples, and oranges. This change was attributed to the influence of the Fauve painters including Raoul Dufy. In an article for an Art Deco journal in 1910, Dufy wrote, "Modern painters, and particularly the...Fauves have offered a precious contribution to the decorative arts: their use of pure colour and arabesque. Their pictures have broken away from their frames to continue on dresses and walls."
