Baltimore-born artist Shinique Smith transforms personal, cast-off clothing into monuments of memory. In Bale Variant No 0027 (Charm City Girl Stele), bundled garments rise into a vertical pillar that operates as both archive and self-portrait, honoring Black womanhood and the resilience embedded in everyday materials. A graduate of MICA, Smith draws on the school’s legacy of material experimentation connecting Baltimore with broader, global narratives. The BMA’s celebration of two centuries of MICA continues in the Contemporary Wing.
