This album quilt, presented to Captain George W. Russell (1811-1869) in 1852, qualifies as among the most sophisticated or "classic" style of Baltimore album quilts. Characteristics include the enlarged central medallion with appliquéd eagle fashioned from a fondu or rainbow print, corner squares featuring cornucopias filled with fruits and flowers, elaborate floral wreaths, double and triple bowknots, extensive use of layered appliqué to simulate dimension, and numerous inked-in details. Although the quilt bears the names of twenty-two women and exhibits the handiwork of more than one seamstress, the purposeful placement and consistent complexity of motifs, choice of fabrics, and employment of multiple techniques throughout supports the argument for a single designer. Captain Russell enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a steamship captain on the Bay line running between Baltimore and Norfolk, earning the respect of his passengers and public recognition as the "Commodore of the Chesapeake Bay." The Baltimore Sun paid tribute to Russell in his obituary on March 17, 1869 stating: "For years he stood the acknowledged head of his profession, being by nature/peculiarly fitted to an occupation requiring amiability of temper, indomitable/perseverance, and true manly fortitude. During the thirty-five years he was/so closely identified with the Bay line Capt. Russell never lost a life aboard/his boat, and comparatively little property." In death, Russell was commemorated by flags displayed at halfmast in the port of Baltimore. In life, he received many gifts from admirers, including a quilt "containing the richest emblems" mentioned in his obituary. Among this quilt's ambitious blocks are several especially suited to the recipient. Captain Russell's occupation is revealed in a square featuring his steamship, the North Carolina. His membership in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) and the Masons is indicated by symbols of both organizations, including the all-seeing eye of God, the heart in hand, the beehives, and the three links representing Friendship, Love and Truth. The magnificent eagle surrounded by stars which occupies the enlarged center square resembles the emblem found on the charter of the Washington Lodge of the IOOF. Conservation of the Captain George W. Russell Album Quilt and creation of the pattern sets for this quilt and the Samuel Williams Album Quilt supported in part by the Baltimore Appliqué Society.
