The so-called Mission Indians do not belong to a single tribe by this name. Rather, the term covers the members of many groups, from the area between present-day San Francisco and the Mexican border, who came under the authority of the Spanish missions in the 1700s. Although many (but not all) of these people prefer to be called by their own tribal names, it can be difficult to identify material culture by tribe and so the term "Mission" remains in use.
