Renoir's initial employment as a decorator of porcelain may have accounted for his life-long interest in still life. As a young man, he explored the genre with his Impressionist colleagues, Frédéric Bazille and Claude Monet. In this work, painted at Cagnes-sur-Mer in the south of France where he settled late in life, Renoir has focused on a sumptuous bouquet of roses in full bloom. In its expressive handling of paint and rich color, it speaks of his joyous response to the varied manifestations of nature.
