Box Decorated with Swimming Dragon Fish

1899

Physical Qualities Patinated metal, moriage enamel, 5 x 17.7 x 10 cm. (1 15/16 x 6 15/16 x 3 15/16 in.)
Credit Line Gift of Stephen W. Fisher, Baltimore
Object Number 2011.349
The moriage enamel depicts a dragon-headed fish, the Chinese symbol of a scholar 'jumping the Dragon Falls' or passing the entrance examination required for appointment to the official bureaucracy, surrounded by swirling waters. The surface patination and dowel-mounted corners give the box the appearance of leather decorated with wireless raised enamels in shades of teal, lavendar, orange and yellow. The cloth lining appears to be a replacement.
