The box with has double handles on the top sides, and metal plates at each of the 8 corners. The front of the box, decorated with a single bat-shaped ornament applique and 2 painted gold characters slides up to reveal five trays which contain tiles, and other items for play. The tiles are bamboo and (ox?) bone decorated with standard Mah Jong motifs in red, green and blue pigments.
