Two small children confront a hen blocking their path through picturesque woods. Black artist and author John Henry Adams, Jr., drew idealized portraits for journals including The Voice of the Negro and The Crisis and wrote essays that defined conventions
of beauty for Black Americans. He was part of a larger movement led by Alain Locke (1885–1954) and W. E. B. Du Bois (1868–1963) celebrating racial pride amid growing racist oppression and segregation.
