During the Medieval and Renaissance eras, horses played a critical role in battle and were often equipped with armor as elaborate as that worn by their riders. Placed on the front of the animal's head, this chamfron provided protection without interfering with the horse's vision. The intricate decoration suggests that the piece was possibly reserved for ceremonial occasions. Of note are various elements within the compostion which include mounted knights, fallen combatants, some in Moorish dress, and a range of other components, the whole embellished with silver and gold.
