Made in or near Norwich, Connecticut, this block front chest-on-chest offers an eclectic mix of sophisticated features borrowed from cabinetmaking centers in nearby Newport, Rhode Island, and Boston, Massachusetts. The large, deeply carved shells on the base were a common Newport motif. The upper case is framed by Boston-derived engaged pilasters (shallow columns) whose finely carved Corinthian capitals may have been purchased by the cabinetmaker from an urban shop to add an extra flourish to his piece.
