Mid-nineteenth century dress fabrics also featured naturalistic floral displays. This two-tiered fabric, composed of a double band of roses with rows of fringe, may have been manufactured for use as an ornamental border around one of the fashionable multi-tiered skirts of this period. Chiné a la branche is created when the warp threads of a fabric are pre-printed or dyed with the design before being woven. The result is a luxurious soft-edged look.
