Born of Spanish parents, Diaz was a leading figure of the Barbizon school, working frequently in the Fontainebleau forest with his friend and mentor, Théodore Rousseau. His intimate views of the forest's interior, often incorporating mythological figures or gypsies, were especially popular with collectors. The most daring colorist of the Barbizon painters, he was much admired for the bold brushwork and rich, varied textures that mark his romantic landscape compositions.
