Former director of MICA’s Rinehart School of Sculpture for nearly 20 years, Maren Hassinger popularized an experiential approach to sculpture grounded in performance, material exploration, and critical inquiry. In Daily Mask, she repeatedly drew black lines across her face until it was fully covered, evoking a history of blackface and minstrel shows. Using her own body as a site, Hassinger framed performance as a form of communication over entertainment, calling it “a spiritual endeavor.”
