Reds, blues, oranges, greens, and yellows: Stanley Whitney built these three stained glass compositions as he builds his paintings, by stacking brilliant blocks of color. Each color is chosen for the way it speaks to the others in a call and response. As the world spins and orbits, natural light shifts and amplifies the feel of animation in these windows.
Among his many inspirations, Whitney’s painterly improvising encompasses his love of jazz, the Egyptian pyramids, abstract painting in New York, and the inventive quilts of Gee’s Bend in Alabama. Whitney also admires Henri Matisse’s saturated colors and organic line; in particular, Matisse’s stained-glass window installation for the Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence in Southern France sparked the idea for this commission. Designed by Whitney, these windows were produced by Mayer of Munich, the world’s preeminent glass studio since the mid-19th century.
