William Zorach was one of the earliest and most influential American sculptors dedicted to direct carving. He delighted in selecting unusual blocks of stone and discovering, as he worked, the grain and color of the material that inspired the final subject and design of the sculpture. Etta Cone commissioned this marble portrait as well as a bronze version, from the artist in 1943.
