In Sandtown, young Black kids smile brightly at the camera. A more solemn FAM shows a similar group of children embracing each other. The black-and-white images honor children in moments when they aren’t bruised by the world but instead project hope, light, and optimism. These candid instances celebrate life’s beautiful moments, especially those that often go unnoticed, and invite viewers to embrace similar emotions of happiness, love, and vulnerability. SHAN Wallace photographs the people of Baltimore with affection and deep familiarity, offering a genuine and tender glimpse into the experience of being Black in Baltimore, a perspective often overshadowed. The artist states: “I’m dedicated to documenting a spectrum of Black life, from the simplest gestures of love between us, to the ways in which we congregate in familiar spaces like our neighborhood corners or bus stops.” (Jessica Bell Brown, How Do We Know The World: Rotation 5, December 2023 - June 2024)
