The addition of lead created the deep, shiny red of later oxblood glazes; it also caused the glaze to run which necessitated the additional step of grinding the footrim smooth. Fance Franck's desire to avoid both the glassy, vivid color and the need to grind the footrim led to the development of her signature fresh red glaze.
