An oval shaped needlework depicting a cock pheasant (perhaps the "Golden Pheasant") perched in a branched tree or shrub with long clusters of hanging flowers or grapes and multi colored leaves. The bird sits on a lower branch facing to the right. The tree sits upon a small island with flowers at the bottom. An undulating vine with various flowers and fruits (carnations, daisies, bluebells, roses, violas, lilies, petunias (?), and strawberries) creates a wreath border around this center motif and joins at the bottom of the picture with a larer flower and a two-toned bow. The embroiderer's name "JANE BALFOUR and the date "1723" or "1793" are worked in black threads to the right and left of the base of the tree/shrub in capital letters with flourishes and curlicues. Below the tree/shrub is embroidered "MRS OSTLE'S SCHOOL" in the same elaborate lettering. The embroidery is worked in multiple colors of silk threads (several shades of brown, dk grey-brown, dk. blue green, medium blue green, yellow-green, gold, black, medium blue, lt. blue, rose red, black, medium bright blue, lt. blue, dark grey, lt. pink, lt. gold, pink dull lt. grey green, cream, beige, and dk. olive green) on a somewhat coarse plain-woven linen ground. Stitches employed include satin, encroaching satin, laid and couched, stem, seeding or speckling stitches, and possibly split stitch. The frame is wood with a slight gesso layer, probably originally gilded, but possibly repainted with a dull metallic paint or varnished over. No mat is present. This appears to be the original frame judging from its size, shape, and condition.
