Scenes like this one represent the connections between rural development and economic change across the United States. The spare, wavy hills of Olinka Hrdy’s Good Earth evoke the Dust Bowl landscape of her home state Oklahoma, but depict the southern California area of Woodland Hills before its development into a Los Angeles suburb.
