The Havana-based collaborative, Los Carpinteros, creates imaginary architecture and domestic objects that combine form and function to fanciful effect. The artists’ playful spirit is apparent in "Greenhouse," an image of transparent green buildings arranged like formal French gardens.
Although "Greenhouse" might be seen as quirky or whimsical, it can also be read as a response to more serious concerns. Due to the threat of censorship, Cuban artists rarely criticize the government directly. However, such official constraints often encourage creative commentary. If one is aware that French-styled gardens surround El Capitolio (a building that served as the country’s government headquarters until the Cuban Revolution in 1959 and is now a cultural landmark), it is possible to develop a variety of interpretations of this unusual scenario in which manmade architecture takes the place of nature.
The strong geometric features of neighboring artworks in this gallery highlight the essential visual elements of Los Carpinteros’ image: the neutral background, limited palette, and central trapezoidal form that gives way to more complex geometric shapes representing structure and shadow. Were Los Carpinteros to execute this picture as sculpture (as they occasionally do with preparatory drawings), viewers could walk around or through the work as a three-dimensional form in real space just as they do with nearby pieces by Judd and Eliasson.
