Veronese, like other Renaissance masters, maintained a workshop staffed by assistants and skilled family members who produced faithful copies of his paintings. After Veronese’s death, the workshop continued to work in his tradition. At least five versions of this composition exist. The original is located in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Veronese, who loved the splendor of sumptuous fabric, golden hair, and pearls, created a beautiful Saint Barbara who bears no trace of the tragic circumstances of her martyrdom. In this very shallow but dramatically lit foreground space, Saint Barbara and the Virgin Mary dominate the painting, cradling a sleeping Christ Child between them. Saint John the Baptist, kissing the foot of the Christ Child, and Joseph are squeezed almost as afterthoughts into the corner.
