Pedestal-based earthenware vessels with elaborately modeled lids served as censers or insensarios throughout the greater Nicoya region of Costa Rica. The lids of these incense burners are often ornamented with modeled crocodiles, caimans, or felines. This example is a fragmentary modeled crocodile that would have embellished the lid of one of these incensarios. Potosi Applique ceramic type
