Interior with Dog is the result of a complete shift in Matisse’s work. In the early 1930s, he stopped making the more familiar small-scale canvases seen in this gallery. During a hiatus from easel painting, he spent most of his time on a large mural decoration for the main hall of the Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania. After being absorbed for so long with the monumental scale of the Barnes project, Matisse produced Interior with Dog. With its unusually large scale, flatness, vibrant palette, overlapping patterns, and simplified forms, Interior with Dog was an experimental work for Matisse that marked a midway point between mural and easel painting. While working on this painting, he played with the composition by pinning large pieces of painted paper onto the canvas, a method he had used during the mural project. This use of colored paper as a compositional tool prefigured the paper cut-outs that Matisse produced in his later years.
