Kiddush, literally, “sanctification,” is a blessing that is recited over wine or grape juice to sanctify the Shabbat and Jewish holidays. Although any cup will suffice, a silver goblet is ordinarily used. After the person reciting the Kiddush prayer drinks some of the wine, the rest is passed around the table in the goblet or poured into small cups, such as this one, allowing other participants in the ceremony to partake. According to inscriptions on this cup, it was presented by Is. I. Cohen of Richmond, Virginia, to a Mr. Levy in 1801.
