This impressively large jar mirrors the shape of the amphora beside it. A utilitarian vessel, the jar would have had a wooden stopper wrapped in frabric and securely tied to the four straps on the shoulder. Utilitarian vessels of all types were placed in tombs to provide comfort to the soul of the deceased.
