The President Shouting at the Top of Her Voice. Ladies, you are fromally violating § 3 of our constitution which states that no more than five graduates may talk at the same time... I call you to order... silence! Well, since ringing my bell seems to have no effect, I suspend that meeting and take my hat!... Now you can all do what you want!

Various news. "The Rue de la Lune has been illuminated with gas light." Correction: In our last edition instead of "The mayor has given birth to twins" it should read: "He has returned into town." We are being informed from Dijon: "The latest frost has completely destroyed the mustard seeds; this will most likely result in considerable price increases for Moutarde de Dijon." - We inform our readers of a new kind of activity: cunning swindlers are getting information about the addresses of regular patrons of coffee houses. While the clients are reading the newspapers, the thieves will pillage to their home.

Robert Macaire before his judges. Very well! Yes, gentlemen, I was rather unfortunate at the Assize Court... but misfortune is always respectable!... moreover, it’s true what has been said, I've a habit of subtracting money, it's easier to excuse me than someone else because it's harder for me to resist my weakness... as for the rest, I am accused of selling lead for gold? Twenty witnesses swear to it. Very well! I deny it forty times and since two denials are worth an avowal it's clear that you cannot find me guilty. (after this brilliant improvisation Robert Macaire is condemned with a maximum sentence).

The Ladies' Bath. Yes, my dear, it is just the way I have the honour of telling you. I was pregnant with him for eleven months and people thought I was dropsical. Would you believe that this is already six years ago? He takes after his father, drum-major of the 6th legion. Sings the Marseillaise (national anthem) by heart and has a drink in the morning like a real fire-fighter. Oh, my little darling, come here and give your mother a kiss!

The early morning caller. This person enters your home early in the morning and walks stealthily like a thief. If you wake up, he pretends having entered the wrong apartment, looking for a Mr. Pierre or a Mr. Paul. He is abashed with apologies and retreats after carrying off what has fallen into his hands. This man works around all the hotels, knowing that the travellers have the habit of leaving their key in the door.

Here, Eudoxie, take my bear skin... since from now on I will not have the pleasure any more to wear it, I give it to you to make a muff out of it... This way I have at least the satisfaction of seeing it from time to time
