George A. Lucas cultivated personal connections with many artists at all phases of their careers. Here, Félix-Hilaire Buhot used his etching of a funeral procession in the rain as stationery for a letter he wrote to Lucas, writing in the margins surrounding the printed image. By the time he created this print, Buhot’s work was renowned by collectors in France as well as in the United States, in part due to Lucas’ influence. Lucas owned over 260 prints by Buhot and also assisted New York City-based collector Samuel Putnam Avery (1822– 1904) in acquiring prints by the artist. Avery’s collection ultimately contained around 300 prints by Buhot. Lucas and Avery often purchased several versions of a print to show differences in ink, paper type, and design.
