Henri Charles Guérard was an experimental printmaker par excellence. Here he explores the use of different techniques to render similar subjects, in this case a chimney sweep and a young boy (likely of the same working-class profession) dressed for work in clogs and kneepads. The woodcut at left is made from rolling ink across the top of the carved image, resulting in hard, jagged lines. In contrast, the process of aquatint etching used to create "Youth in Clogs" allows for a range of curves and gray tones, resulting in an overall softer image.
