This chair is one of only two known versions still in existence by California designer Maurice Martiné. Suspended on a triangular metal frame, the rectangular cotton cord and walnut seat guides the sitter to a low center of gravity. Inspired by Scandinavian style, California interiors of the 1930s and 1940s emphasized horizontal planes, geometric lines, and subtle tonal variation, all echoing the state’s dry canyons and Pacific horizon. The combination of materials historically used for chairs—wood and textile—with thin metal beams unites traditional design history with a modern, industrially manufactured support. Because of its sophisticated composition, this chair won first prize for furniture in 1947 from the American Institute of Decorators.
