Here, Matisse created a rather stern portrait of his good friend, Matthew Stewart Prichard (1865–1936), who was an expert on Byzantine and Islamic art. After serving as assistant curator at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts, in the early 1900s, Prichard relocated to Europe where he worked as an independent scholar. He and Matisse remained friendly for years, with Prichard teaching the artist about Eastern art in their many lengthy discussions.
