Male (bia) and female (bla) figures are carved to placate a jealous spirit lover, who was left in the other world (blolo) at the birth of the owner. Male figures, with the scarification and coiffure of the Baule, are carved for a woman who may have had trouble conceiving a child. A beautiful figure for her spirit spouse to reside in and be cared for may alleviate her problem.
