In Mama’s Little Rock and Roll Baby, a child’s rocking chair implies youthful movement and sound even when the chair is not in use, while also recalling stereotypes Miller encountered growing up. Emerging as part of a generation of Black artists at MICA during a period of institutional and cultural transformation in the 1960s, Miller’s work used movement, humor, and found objects to collapse distinctions between disciplines.
