A portrait painting of Mary "Polly" Sterett prior to her marriage to Richard Johnston Gittings, 1788. Oil on canvas. The portrait depicts Polly in a diaphanous gown of light blue chiffon over pink silk. Pink silk ribbon accents at the sleeves are gathered by small strings of pearls. A large pastel blue sash cinches her waist and forms a voluminous bow at the back. Polly has brown eyes, which gaze directly at the viewer. Her dark brown hair is elegantly and youthfully coiffed. She stands next to a wicker birdcage that holds two gray mockingbirds. As Polly holds the cage door ajar, one of the birds hovers above an open book, which reads, "I can't get out!" In the background, sheep graze under a dark, cloudy sky in an open field surrounded by tall trees.
