Kanemitsu created this striking portrait of Mildred Hunt Smith, his first wife, during their time together in Baltimore. He captured her deep-set eyes, long neck, and statuesque bearing with deft shading. Smith grew up in Baltimore and was the reason that the artist settled here after World War II. The marriage was short-lived, and the couple separated in 1951.
