Moonlight fascinated Johan Jongkind throughout his career. As an accomplished painter and printmaker, he was especially responsive to the effects of light on both land and water. He searched for his subject matter in his native Holland, as well as in Brittany and Normandy in northern France.
Jongkind produced small informal landscapes that were inspirational to the next generation of painters, particularly the young Claude Monet. The artist gave this moonlit view as a gift to the prominent French photographer Félix Nadar, as indicated by the inscription at lower right.
