Rectangular mosaic quilt top composed of six-sided "mosaic" motifs of many different solid and printed fabrics, including stripes, checks, plaids, florals, geometrics and other cottons. Fabrics appear to range from about 1830 to 1880 with multiple colored grounds and patterns in a wide range of colors, including green, red, teal blue, and predominately brown. The quilt top was constructed using English template piecing but few if any of the paper templates that were originallly used to create the straight sided edges of the pattern pieces survive. Two hundred thirty two whole mosaic patterns, each composed of 19 individual hexagonal pieces, are arranged in alternating rows of 14 and 15 with 47 partial mosaic patterns around the edges. These are surrounded by white-grounded hexagonal pieces that form an hexagonal grid. The total number of whole and partial hexagonal pieces forming ground and motifs is 6,820. All piecing is by hand displaying excellent skill. No backing or quilting is present.
