In 1913 Tanner began making prints, especially etchings. Here, the artist has produced a print on a typical Orientalist theme—the entryway into a mosque. In this scene Tanner has combined careful observation of people and architecture with a spontaneous and fluid line, aptly conveying the sense of movement and activity in a busy city. In addition to its light, people, and customs, Tanner, like many Western artists who ventured to North Africa, was fascinated by the exquisite Arab architecture.
